we have a class to suit your needs.
Class sizes are small so that everyone can benefit from personal attention.
All our classes are guided by experienced highly qualified instructors.

Introduction to Patternmaking I
This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of patternmaking and garment assembly in a focused and hands-on learning environment. Students will apply a range of techniques such as block development, dart manipulation, familiarisation with a variety of silhouette alterations and patternmaking terminology and symbols. Aspects of construction such as cutting, laying, fusing, yokes, pockets, waistbands, fastenings will be explored and applied to sample garments. Students will use domestic Bernina/Bernette sewing machines and Juki industrial machines to test their skirt and basic bodice patterns and apply professional finishes to their garments.
You will need to bring to your first class paper scissors, rulers, 2B pencils and eraser.

Introduction to Sewing I
This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of of sewing in a hands-on learning environment. Students will complete Sewing Class 1 to 6 over the eight week program. Aspects of construction such as cutting, laying, fusing, yokes, pockets, waistbands, fastenings will be explored and you will create a fabulous range of item from a sling bag to a basic skirt and shirt. Students will use domestic Bernina/Bernette sewing machines and apply professional finishes to their garments.
Sewing equipment and all materials will be supplied for your first class.

Sewing Class 1: The Machine & Basic Functions
For those who are completely new to sewing. This class will be led in a simple and easy to follow format. First you will be acquainted with the sewing machine, and its features, dials and buttons. You will learn to confidently set up the machine for sewing - how to insert a needle, thread the machine, and wind and load a bobbin. You will also be introduced to the different stitches and their application for different fabric types. In the second half of class you will make your own sewing satchel, whilst learning handy construction tips.

Sewing Class 2: Sling Bag
Create a cool and practical sling bag with a closed patch pocket to hold your valuables. Bring along your favourite fabrics, once you’ve made one there’s no stopping you! All sewing equipment is provided by The Sewing Room, but please bring along fabric to make your bag.

Bring with you: Two different pieces of woven cotton fabric, each 1 meter lengths (2 meters in total), matching thread.
Sewing Class 3: Zippers, Casings & Buttonholes
Learn to finish your garments with working and professional looking closures. This class will give you the information you need to confidently sew in zippers and buttonholes, and make casings for elastic and drawstrings. You will also practice overlocking edges, to give your garments a long lasting neat finish. These great-toknow techniques will lengthening the life of your clothing - now you will be able to replace thoughs worn and broken closures on your existing cloths yourself. You will leave with great pencil case or makeup bag incorporating all these wonderful new techniques.

Sewing Class 4: Sewing the basic skirt
Create a basic skirt to standard sizes. You’ll be shown how to take your measurements, and how to selected a pattern, lay your pattern pieces and cut fabric. You will cover a range of professional sewing techniques and leave with a stunning new skirt to wear out and about.
1 x 6 hour session or 2 x 3 hour session

Bring with you: 1 x 20cm - 30cm invisible zipper, 2 metres of woven fabric and matching thread.
Sewing Class 5: Sewing the basic shirt
Create a basic mens or womens shirt to standard sizes. You’ll be shown how to take your measurements, and how to select a pattern, lay your pattern pieces and cut fabric. You will cover a range of professional sewing techniques and leave with a fabulous new shirt to wear or a lovingly sewn gift for a friend.

Sewing Class 6: Sewing with Stretch Fabrics
Sewing with stretch and knit fabrics can be quite tricky but in this class you will learn tips and tricks for successful sewing, as well as troubleshooting when it comes to overlockers. After you have been armed with the necessary skills you will complete a basic t-shirt.

BYO: 1m of cotton knit or wool knit fabric for the Men’s T-shirt. 1m of cotton rib or cotton elastane jersey for the Women’s T-shirt. The Sewing Room will provide the pattern.
Boxers Shorts
Cool and comfy boxer shorts with soft elastic waistband and perfect as PJ’s on those hot summers nights. You can team them with a basic t-shirt from our Sewing Basics Mod 6: Sewing with Stretch Fabrics, you can’t go wrong!

PJ Shirt & Pants
PJ’s perfect for catching all the Z’s you need after a hard day. This sleep shirt with front pocket and buttons down the front and pants with soft elastic waistband and the perfect length for you on those hot summers nights.

Basic alterations
In 3 short hours, we will be acquainted with the sewing machine, and its features, dials and buttons, then how to mend and alter your clothes. This class will be led in a simple and easy to follow format. This class will give you the confidence to ditch your alterationist and save money. Then if you want to further your skills we have plenty of project classes for you to try out your new skills in.

FOR MEN: Begin, alter & repair in 3 hours
In 3 short hours, learn to wind the plastic circle bit, put the thread on the machine thingy and then how to mend and alter your clothes. This class will give you the confidence to ditch your alterationist and save money, all in a men only class. Then if you want to further your skills we have plenty of project classes for you to try out your new skills in.

Pattern making for skirts
Create your own skirt patterns to fit you perfectly. You’ll be shown where to take measurements, and how to draft your personalised pattern, covering a range of professional pattern making techniques. We will cover some basic skirt variations and get you well on your way to designing your own individual adaptations.

Simple Shift Dress

Check out this cutie! Make your own 60’s inspired Twiggy-style shift or a simple pretty dress. Learn to adapt the pattern for your body, and how to sew this little gem into something you’ll be excited to wear out. Children’s wear Age 1 to 4
Create gorgeous shorts and a shirt or a dress to standard childrens sizing. You’ll be shown how to lay pattern pieces, cut fabric and sew these adorable chidrens outfit using professional finishes. There will be no stopping you and a world of ideas will open up in the adorable cloths you will be able to create for your little ones.

Swimwear
Have you ever wanted to make your own swinwear? Learn the professional tricks of the trade to construct swimwear from swimwear fit & working with lycra to sewing with the overlocker, elasticating swimwear, fastenings and finishes. You will be off to a swimming start with this class.

Retro Floor Cushions
Create your own fashionable floor cushions or cushions for your lounge. In this 2 hour class you will learn to construct a cushion with a zip closure – and if you are a speedy sewer, you might even finish two cushions or more!

Retro Kitchenware - Apron and potholder to match
Create your own retro apron perfect for covering you up when your baking in the kitchen and a potholder to match to stop you burning your fingies. Fashion Design 1
Designing is a matter of mixing the elements of design in new and exciting ways in order to create a your own fresh look. You will explore the elements of design and how they relate to fashion design (and latest fashion trends) focusing on silhouette and line. This introductory workshop will help you to analyse fashion silhouettes and experiment with line and shape.

Fashion Design 2
Create a fashion design 'story' by exploring the principles of design. A design story is a small interrelated groups of designs - a fundamental skill needed by fashion designers. In this hands-on workshop you will apply forecast design information to develop your designs with a focus on design principles in fashion.

Fashion Design & Colour Theory
Explore the role of colour and texture in fashion design through the visual appeal of textiles. In this hands-on workshop you will produce a unified colour and texture scheme in paper, as a guide for your textile design development. This will then be applied to a fashion design 'story'.This weekend workshop offers a step-by-step process in a fun and relaxed environment, each process is clearly demonstrated by the experienced workshop leader.

One Week Workshop 10am – 4pm daily Apply your creativity and the latest international trend information to the fashion design process, exploring design and fashion drawing techniques to develop, draw, present and produce your fashion design ideas for a specific design brief.

Contemporary Fashion Illustration
In this course students are introduced to the fundamentals of fashion drawing, its applications in contemporary fashion and a range of rendering techniques. They explore the proportions and stylised features of the female fashion figure, drawing a range of fashion poses and garment styles.

Knitting for Beginners & Beyond
(For knitters of all levels)
This class is for everyone with an interest in knitting - beginners picking up their needles for the first time, those having trouble with a project, or anyone who likes to socialise while they knit. Bring along your knitting projects and ask knitting wiz Tim for her handy tips and advice.

Millinery I: The Hat & Basic Techniques
This is an introduction into millinery we will examine & explore a range of materials & tools used in hat making. Traditional construction techniques and methods are applied to a basic sample, then latest millinery trends provide inspiration for a millinery exercise. The Darnell Collection and contemporary fashion forecast information will be used to inspirer and demonstrate the potential of the techniques

Textile Design I
This is an introduction into textile design we will examine & explore a range of methods from digital design through to fabric application. Looking at meterage, placement & border prints. Contemporary fashion forecast information will be used to inspirer and demonstrate the potential of the techniques. Basic techniques and methods are applied to a basic sample using linocut design / potatoe cut printing on cool organic T-shirts or organic fair trade calio bag.
1 x 3 hour session

Arm yourself with a apron and photograph of your favourite pair of shoes or what ever you may like on your t-shirt, this is loads of fun. Printing equipment and all materials will be supplied. Just tell us what size t-shirt when you book please.
Textile Design II
Pleating in fashion this workshop is a fun look at designing with pleating and contemporary pleating techniques, we will look at pleating techniques and methods used by such designers as Issey Miyake. Then we will experiment with some of these techniques to create basic samples that canbe later using in a garment or furniture application.

Textile Design III
Surface manipulations in fashion this workshop exploration in appliqué, pintucking & ruching, modern day smocking & shirring etc. We will look at techniques and methods used in current fashion trends and use these to inspirer and demonstrate the potential of the techniques. Arm yourself with a pair of scissors and loads of confidence, You’re going to cut, fold, sew and applique’ your way to a whole new level of everyday chic which canbe applied to a t-shirt or sew into a basic bag.

Introduction to Camera Techniques.
Discover how to master your digital camera in this course you begin from the basics and work your way through the characteristics of natural light and how to ulilise SLR camera instrumentation to capture and manipulate light. Students are tutored in the functions and operations of their SLR camera to create visual communications through photography. The use of aperture and shutter speed combined with selective focus, lens characteristics and composition to control the image captured. You study how light and the camera's operation interpret and tranlate the scene into a successful image.

Refashion a vintage pair of jeans from the op-shop.
We are going to refashion a pair of jeans or garment from the op-shop armed with a pair of scissors and loads of confidence. You’re going to cut, fold, sew and applique’ your way to a whole new level of everyday chic.

Bring with you: A pair of jean or simple garment from you local op-shop. Sewing equipment and all materials will be supplied.
Reproduce Your Favourite Garments.
Make patterns from existing garments, how many times have you wished that you could have that same favourite piece of clothing over again? Learn how to make patterns from exiting garments without even pulling them apart. Make simple alterations to the patterns to make them fit even better than the first time. Over 8 weeks we will cover pattern making starting with a simple T- shirt (jersey/knit fabric) through to trousers. This three hour course is dedicated to pattern making with all sewing to done outside the class to test patterns. Therefore this course is designed for experienced sewers.

You will need to bring to your first class paper scissors, grading ruler, tracing wheel, and a french curve (available for purchase from The Sewing Room), 2B pencils and eraser. Any fabrics you wish to make up into garments.
